I think it is disheartening to students if they feel they are "just a number". No matter how old we are, we still need to feel we are important to others-even an instructor/professor. Conveying caring through engaging students, even when you must encourage them to push harder, is an important part of what we do. These human needs dont go away, whether we are in a formal lecture hall, or an elearning environment. I can fully grasp the sensibility of this article, and hope that it spurs faculty to increase their caring
quotient.

I appreciate the distinction between professors caring about students and students seeing that professors care.

On one hand, it's not enough to care; you have to show it in ways that students can receive it. On the other hand, even days one might feel out of it, one can still project care.

The first day/week of my classes, all of my students are introduced to the 3Rs: Relationships; Relevance; and Rigor. I tell them we are going to establish a professional relationship to open a doorway of trust; everything taught will be relevant with rigorous standards and expectations!

Excellent! I practice the strategies mentioned in the article like "using personal examples, asking questions and encouraging students to talk, using humor in class, addressing students by name". I can tell it really works! Caring makes the difference!
