I am a strong believer that these skills should be taught in the K-12 schools. A quality library program and teaches research (information literacy) skills would alleviate some of the lack of skills that are being discussed at the college level. I have been a teacher librarian for several years and have been a part of designing quality library programs where students can have cross-curricular experiences with research, citations, and writing. However, the last district I worked for deemed it necessary to eliminate their teacher librarians and the library program that was designed with the help of people from the state library and other educational areas. Their focus was reading and math. If a good K-12 library program is imbedded in the district curriculum, then research skills are built from early on and it should be second nature to students in high school to conduct comprehensive research and good writing. When they get to your level, students should be researching and writing with minimal assistance from the professor. But until K-12 adopts that type of strategy, unfortunately, you will be teaching it at the college level and not just continuing to strengthen those skills.
