Magna 20 minute mentor

What Can I Legally Tell People Who Call Me About My Students?

Program includes a CD with the video presentation, plus supplemental materials, PowerPoint slides, and complete transcript • $99

When you receive a request for information about one of your students: Will you know how to respond to the request properly under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and your institution’s policies on student records and students’ rights?

Requirements for the disclosure of student information under FERPA and individual institutions are both comprehensive and complex, as they define and govern the handling of not-confidential information as well as confidential educational records. In addition, under FERPA there are “danger zones” where individual disclosure acts could be in non-compliance depending on the circumstances.

W. Scott Lewis, J.D., president-elect of the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA) outlines the questions that you must ask before responding to inquiries about your students.

During this 20-minute program, you will learn:

  • The six questions you should ask in responding to a request for information about a student.
  • FERPA basics, definitions, key concepts and exceptions.
  • FERPA “danger zones” for faculty and staff.

The program also includes supplemental materials that feature sample syllabus statements, links to more information, information on student records and rights, and two scripts that show sample conversations with parents and other faculty members. All for just $99.

Learning outcomes

  • Kinds of information you might be asked to provide.
